PE Pipe manufacturing Process

Time:2026-08-13

PE pipes are widely used in water supply and drainage systems, municipal water transmission, gas distribution, and other applications due to their excellent corrosion resistance, high toughness, and long service life. As a complete plastic extrusion system, a PE pipe extrusion line processes PE resin pellets into qualified finished pipes through a continuous and fully automated production process. Below is a step-by-step overview of the complete manufacturing process, from raw materials to finished products.

Raw Material Feeding

PE resin pellets are conveyed into the hopper through an automatic centralized material feeding system or an individual hopper loader. According to the production formula, the system performs material proportioning and conveying, delivering the raw materials into the extruder barrel with stable and continuous feeding while minimizing manual intervention.

Extrusion and Plasticizing

The raw material enters the single-screw extruder, where the barrel is heated in multiple temperature zones. As the screw rotates, the PE material is conveyed forward while undergoing shearing, melting, and mixing. The solid pellets gradually become a homogeneous molten material, which is then delivered under pressure to the extrusion die.

Pipe Die Forming

The molten PE enters the pipe extrusion die and passes through the annular gap between the mandrel and die sleeve, forming a continuous tubular profile. The precision of the die directly determines the wall thickness uniformity and dimensional accuracy of the finished pipe.

Vacuum Calibration and Cooling

The newly extruded pipe has a high temperature and remains soft, so it immediately enters the vacuum calibration tank. Vacuum suction accurately calibrates the outer diameter of the pipe while a circulating water system rapidly cools and solidifies the material, locking in the required dimensions. The pipe then passes through additional cooling water tanks to ensure stable shape and consistent quality.

Haul-Off

The haul-off machine grips the cooled and calibrated pipe and continuously pulls it forward at a constant speed. The haul-off speed must be precisely synchronized with the extrusion output speed, as any mismatch directly affects wall thickness, dimensional accuracy, and overall product quality.

Online Inspection

Some complete PE pipe extrusion lines are equipped with online inspection systems that continuously monitor the pipe’s outer diameter and wall thickness in real time. The measured data is fed back instantly to ensure the finished products meet required quality standards.

Cutting and Coiling

The pipe is continuously transported to the cutting unit, where it is automatically cut to preset lengths. Large-diameter pipes are stacked after cutting, while small-diameter flexible PE pipes can be coiled automatically for convenient storage and transportation.

Final Inspection and Finished Products

After cutting or coiling, the PE pipes undergo visual inspection and dimensional sampling. Qualified products are then packaged, stored, and prepared for shipment.
